Okay, I’m watching Oprah’s special today getting amazed all over again by the Olympics…especially the gymnasts (the fly through the air turns and flips and landings, whoa!) Then later I checked out the Monday Night football game…these football players look like big lumbering cardboard cereal boxes compared to the body strength and agility of these tiny little Nastia Liukins and Shawn Johnsons…who’s stronger? Even star running back Adrian Peterson looked slow and stiff compared to these girls…

When words and phrases like “beast” and “awesome” and “unbelievably incredible” just won’t do, we now have “Phelpsian”…try it in the next situation when something truly remarkable and awe-inspiring happens and see how good it feels and how all the people around you gasp at your mastery of hip expressiveness…go ahead, unleash your inner champion, be Phelpsian…

Today fan favorite American and 28 year-old James Blake shocked the former world #1 Roger Federer by not only winning a set (which he’s only done once in eight previous meetings), but by dominating and demoralizing the Swiss’s usually flawless game, final score 6-4, 7-6…not even close buddy Tiger could help Fed this time…

The butterfly has got to be not only the toughest swimming stroke, but the coolest and most powerfully impressive to watch…certainly one that Michael Phelps has perfected…here’s a black and white illustrated version…

I’m a huge tennis fan, and a huge James Blake fan…seems he’s the only American man left in Olympic tennis with a shot to medal…exciting, but the Olympics and tennis don’t seem to be a compelling match-up…Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny said it best in an interview with the ITF: “In all other sports they have four years to be ready for the Olympic Games. Tennis players don’t have even have four days. … It will be a tough Olympics for all players.” Maybe that explains why Roddick and others didn’t show…of this caricature of Blake a friend of his told me, “You captured his exact power and expression when your looking at him across the net!”… thanks, enjoy and good luck James! Nine world records were set in Omaha about a month ago at the US Olympic Trials…Michael Phelps said, “Hopefully we can come back in a month and show that the U.S. is the best swimming team in the world.” I’m wondering if perhaps this might be the best team EVER…what do you think? This illo was another given as an award for the best male swimmer on my wife’s summer swim team. (Illustrated Sports #31) Actually, for some reason this image wasn’t posting correctly. I’ll try again tomorrow…

These Olympics are going to be fun…the tone already is awesome with records being set and names like Tyson Gay and Michael Phelps and Katie Hoff coming into the headlines…how about this man-beast Reese Hoffa, reigning outdoor shot-put champion, finishing first in the trials (the pink ball doesn’t look that beast-ish, but I won’t tell Reese that)…onto Beijing! My son and I are planning to write and illustrate a book about the great masters of sport. We want to study those in the various sports who set the bars of athletic achievement against which all others are measured. Who were they? Why were (or are) they truly great? What sets them apart? I’m figuring that one unanimous choice for the list is the great Jim Thorpe…hence this brush and ink sketch…who do you think is a true Master of Sport? (Sports Illustration #18 )
