Youth Sports – Are We Having Fun Yet?
July 10, 2008Seems the days of playing for hours, unsupervised with friends out in the woods or in the neighborhood vacant lot are long gone. Unfortunate, those were good times! While I love (and have coached many) youth sports, I sometimes wonder if the kids are having as much fun as we used to. I also wonder if some of the old sayings like “It’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game” have lost much of their luster in our win-at-all-costs, professional-athletes-as-god culture…anyhow, here’s the third installment of fun sports celebration dances…for the love of the game! Official Launch of Shoff Daily Illustration
June 6, 2008Today I’ll be writing six different posts to officially launch a project that I’m really excited about: Shoff Illustrated; Daily Illustration (and the crowd goes wild!) Patterned after a bunch of successful Painting-A-Day projects (Daily Paintings, Duane Keiser,) I’ll be posting some very nearly profound editorial insights illustrated by an original brush, ink and watercolor piece. Each original will also have a link to purchase on Ebay. Enjoy!

May 2, 2008Mixed in with the advertising and promotion jobs that I’m working on, I usually have a private commission project or two that I’m doing. This one was a lot of fun…a graduation gift for a kinesiology student from, you guessed it, Indiana University (going to grad school at UNC)…this guys a sports NUT / EMT / Athletic Trainer / Extreme Skier / Outdoor Fanatic as you can see…these special time pieces are a blast, I especially like the sports related ones! Happy graduation, congratulations!

NFL Grudge Match?
January 15, 2008Is this Patriots versus Chargers game turning into a grudge match? Could the 2007 mock-Merriman-dance-on-the-Charger logo come back to haunt the undefeated (but caught chump-cheating) Patriots? I guess we’ll find out on Sunday…

Play Strong – The Exhibit
November 25, 2007On November 11th I held an opening for my “Play Strong – The Exhibit”, a solo illustration exhibit running from November 1st thru January 31st at the Starbucks Coffee in Danbury. The exhibit overall has received great reviews. Thanks to all who attended the opening! Of particular note, I was delighted to have a few legendary cartoonists attend who I’ve had the honor of getting to know and learn tremendously from since moving to the area. Those were Joe Farris (with his amazing wife Cynthia) and Dana Fradon of New Yorker Magazine fame as well Orlando Busino (with his lovely wife Ann) creator of Gus and three time Cartoonist of the Year recipient. Following are a few photos:

July 26, 2007Delicious Deli
June 16, 2007Just finished this illustrated design for a local (always packed, delicious food) deli celebrating their 25th anniversary, everyone in town loves this place…the town mascot is a tiger…felt pretty good about the way it turned out…they’re going to use it on t-shirts, mugs, merchandise…etc. I’ll be wearing out my t-shirt in matter of weeks. I love cool t-shirts.
One of my favorite delis of all time is Carnegie Deli in NYC, sky-scraper-stacks of corned beef on rye smothered in mustard, chased down with a monster-dill…my mouth is watering…where’s your favorite?

Summer of Dreams
June 8, 2007You just get the feeling this is going to be the greatest summer ever…I drew this just to get myself dreamin’…an illustration friday entry…
Ahh yes, it’s almost that time of year…bust out of school, put the new swim suit on, head to the lake and throw yourself off the dock, not a care in the world, the whole summer on the horizon, airborn freedom (with a little wave to the fans!), the inaugural cannonball splash! I love the lakes of the Northeast US and Tahoe, where are your favorite swimmin’ holes?

Tournament T-Shirt Designs
June 5, 2007Did a few tournament t-shirts recently for the Brewster Sports Center’s A.A.U. Basketball Tournament series…there’s something about designing a t-shirt and then seeing it on a kid who’s wearing it with pride…awesome! I’m the kind of guy who wears my favorite t-shirt until it’s in ribbons…there’s nothing like an awesome, wear-it-’till-it-sheds-from-your-body t-shirt…what’s your favorite tee? Send me a pic and I’ll post it…
Main Street Sweet Shoppe
June 5, 2007In our cool little Connecticut town, there’s an amazing sweet shoppe (notice the olde-time spelling?) where they make the most incredible homemade chocolate, scoop ice cream and where you can create your own candy bar…undeniably delicious! I did this illustration for their t-shirts, merchandise and advertising…good times!

June 4, 2007Master Hoopologist
April 12, 2007A true hoopologist has entered the building…step aside. BTW, my son went to a Harlem Globetrotters game the other night. Had a blast, guess the ‘Trotters are better than ever (I remember I thot they were awesome when I saw them as a kid…)! Also, we went with some of his buddies to the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield…there’s nothing like be surrounded by the greats, Wilt Chamberlain, Pete Maravich, Kareem Abdul Jabar, Magic Johnson, Micheal Jordan, Larry Bird and so many others! Amazing it all started with a peach basket, nice work Dr. Naismith!
